The secret ingredient to Arsenal's Premier League title charge? It might just be their incredible team spirit!
Mikel Arteta, the mastermind behind Arsenal's impressive season, believes that the unshakeable bond within his squad is the key ingredient that will see them through the crucial final stages of their title pursuit. For the first time since the festive period, the Gunners have enjoyed a relatively relaxed midweek schedule, allowing them to focus on their upcoming clash against Chelsea on Sunday.
While rival teams like Manchester City, with their own eased fixture list, saw their manager Pep Guardiola playfully suggest a cocktail-filled getaway to recharge, Arteta opted for a different approach. Although a trip to Dubai was a tempting possibility, he chose to grant his players time off earlier in the week. And here's where it gets fascinating: instead of scattering to their individual lives, a significant number of players chose to spend that time together, enjoying each other's company. This, for Arteta, is the ultimate testament to the tight-knit nature of this Arsenal team.
Arteta shared his thoughts, saying, "I wish we could be in Dubai. If we had one or two more days, I can guarantee you we would have been in Dubai for a few days because everyone was longing for it." He continued, "But then you get very surprised because sometimes when I give them the day off, you think they don't want to see each other, and then I find out that eight or ten players were having dinner at somebody’s house or spent the whole afternoon together. That is the beauty of it, the fact that they want to be together as they feel that being together is the best thing they can do. That was the case this week as well in a lot of instances."
This isn't the first time Arsenal has fostered such camaraderie. In the past, when the fixture list has been more forgiving, the club has organized barbecues for players and their families. When asked if a similar event took place this week, Arteta humorously responded, "In this weather? We only had one day, Wednesday. No barbecue. But the barbecue is coming."
This past week has been a bit of a rarity for Arsenal, offering a chance to spend more time on the training pitch. Arteta is confident this extra preparation will translate into a strong performance against Chelsea.
"It has been different, because obviously we haven’t had the time to do that," Arteta explained. "So they had some time off. After that, we had a little bit more time to train as well. We gathered together in different ways, for example [on Thursday night] we had the Arsenal Foundation event, which was magnificent to be a part of. All the boys were there together. So it has been a different week, very good for our preparation, I believe, and hopefully we can show that on Sunday."
But here's where it gets controversial... While team bonding is undoubtedly crucial, could an overemphasis on social gatherings potentially detract from the intense focus required for a title race? Or is this very unity the ultimate competitive advantage that other teams lack?
