Santander's UK branch closures: A comprehensive list and impact analysis
The banking giant Santander is set to close 58 branches across the UK by 2026, a move that will potentially affect 291 jobs. This decision comes in response to a significant shift in customer behavior towards digital banking. The company aims to adapt its branch network to better serve its customers' evolving needs.
Santander's strategy involves transforming its high-street presence into a more accessible and modern service. Instead of traditional branches, the bank will introduce Santander Local services, which will operate from various community venues like libraries and community centers, as well as through Banking Hub facilities offered by the Post Office. This transformation will result in a reduced physical footprint, but with a focus on providing convenient and digital-friendly options.
The bank's statement highlights the potential redundancy of 291 colleagues, but also reassures that redeployment opportunities will be available. The new branch network will consist of 305 locations, including 244 full-service outlets, 19 counter-free sites, 36 reduced-hour premises, six Work Cafés, and 111 Santander Local locations. This restructuring reflects the bank's commitment to staying relevant in a rapidly changing financial landscape.
The closure of these branches is a direct response to the dramatic surge in online banking. Since 2019, digital dealings have increased by 64%, while physical branch transactions have dropped by 66%. In the past year alone, branch-based transactions have decreased by 13%. This shift in customer behavior has forced Santander to adapt its branch network to better support its customers' preferences.
Santander's spokesperson emphasizes the bank's commitment to both its physical and digital presence. They aim to continue investing in their branch network, including full-service branches, counter-free branches, reduced-hour branches, Santander Locals, and Work Cafés, while also enhancing their digital banking services. This dual approach ensures that customers can access the bank's services however they prefer.
To support customers during this transition, Santander will reach out to potentially vulnerable customers by telephone, offering assistance in finding alternative branches or accessing digital, telephone, and Post Office banking facilities. This proactive approach demonstrates the bank's dedication to customer service and its understanding of the challenges posed by the digital age.
