Unraveling the Unspoken Frustration: Smriti Mandhana's Emotional Journey During India's 2025 World Cup Campaign

The 2025 ICC Women's World Cup campaign was a rollercoaster ride for the Indian team, and Smriti Mandhana, one of the nation's brightest stars, found herself in the eye of the storm. As India struggled through a mid-tournament slump, losing three consecutive games, Mandhana's personal journey was one of both resilience and deep disappointment.

In a candid interview on the RCB Podcast, Mandhana opened up about the emotional turmoil she experienced during this challenging period. She reflected on her remarkable form leading up to the World Cup, highlighting her pride in not being dismissed in the first ten overs in one-day cricket. However, the first three matches did not go as planned, leaving her questioning her performance and choices.

"I came into the World Cup with amazing form. The first three matches did not go as planned, in one-day cricket, I pride myself not to get out in those first ten overs. I remember we lost to South Africa and I had that conversation with myself that what did I do wrong. I was batting well in the nets. I don’t know if it was pressure or I was not making the right choices on that particular day. I did not find myself feeling good in those first three matches. The next match, we lost but I got an 80, and I was getting the rhythm. The England game, I was the most disappointed with myself," Mandhana shared, revealing the internal struggle she faced.

The England game, in particular, left a lasting impression on Mandhana. She questioned her decision to play a certain shot, and the aftermath of the loss haunted her for days. "I thought why did I play that shot (Eng game). The next day we had a flight and in the whole flight I was just disappointed. That was the only time I could not speak to anyone. I was stressing a lot. It was the most pressure I had felt. I told myself not qualifying in a home World Cup will do really bad to women’s cricket in India and will take us 20 years back. I was stressing the whole night before the New Zealand game," Mandhana confessed, painting a vivid picture of her emotional state.

However, Mandhana's resilience shone through in the New Zealand match, where she scored a blistering 109-run innings from 95 balls. She acknowledged the importance of the game and the pressure that came with it, but also emphasized the team's preparation and support. "Considering the importance of the match and all the noise, it was special. There are some reserved trolls for women who keep coming back. But for us as a team, we prepped so well. What people talk changes overnight. As a team, we were just helping each other. It was eating me up that we cannot not qualify for the semi-finals of a home World Cup," Mandhana expressed, showcasing her determination and the team's unity.

Smriti Mandhana's journey during the 2025 World Cup campaign serves as a powerful reminder of the emotional toll that high-pressure situations can take on athletes. Her openness about her struggles not only provides insight into the human side of sports but also inspires others to persevere through their own challenges. As Mandhana continues to shine on the cricket field, her story will undoubtedly resonate with many, offering a glimpse into the complexities of elite sports and the resilience required to overcome adversity.
